Chapter 16
Before stopping home, Griffin checked in at the office. He was eager to ensure that the guests scheduled was arriving on time and assure Owen that the cabin was ready. He was also hoping to nip any teasing in the bud by letting Owen get it out of his system right away
His sister, Payton, who looked up from the gear she was sorting with a wicked grin, greeted Griffin.
âHow was your night? You look pretty beat. Up late?â The brat had the nerve to leer at him, raising her eyebrows suggestively. He was not used to this side of his younger sister. At 22, Payton was brash and outspoken. No topic was off limits for her, and nothing embarrassed her. Last time he was home, Payton was a teenager, more concerned about boys than anything else. Now, she was single-minded in her determination to bring world-class rock climbing to Wildwood Falls. She led many of the backcountry expeditions and all those that required climbing expertise, both rock and ice climbing.
âNah, night was fine. We lost power for a while. And the drive back was a bit dicey. Our guests going to make it out there ok? They have experience in icy driving?â
âNo, theyâre flying in from Seattle. Owen offered to pick them up at the airport and drive them to the cabin.â
âSmart move.â His younger brotherâs foresight was impressive. He should have thought to suggest that idea himself. Yet Owen had worked that out. Maybe he wouldnât have to stay here as long as he thought. If his younger siblings showed they could run the business on their own, then he would be free to leave.
Free to leave. A few days ago, that thought had appeal. Today, after the time with Sarah, he wasnât so sure. He had promised her he would be home more often. Yet the thought of committing to that sent a sharp pang of fear through him. He wasnât the committing kind. He didnât want to hurt Sarah again.
âSo, you survived the night with Sarah?â
His sister pulled him from his thoughts with her direct question. Once again, he marvelled at the young woman Payton had become. Saying exactly what was on her mind with no fear. He wasnât sure how she managed that, given she was fifteen when their Mom died. She had been thrust into the role as the only woman in a houseful of grieving men.
Owen was only three years older than her. Eighteen, ready to take on the world. He had declined to go away to college, instead staying home and going to the local college for his degree. He continued working at the family business. And thank god for that, or Griffin would be in trouble. Owen knew the business and the job. Griffin just had to get his younger siblings through the next few months, and then heâd complete his obligation. Once they showed they could handle the business on their own, heâd move on. Heâd come back more often, maybe, to see Sarah.
